18 new stallions have been admitted to the Zangersheide studbook
In these delicate times, succeeding in organizing an event is a performance in itself. Zangersheide did it in Deauville with no less than 54 stallion candidates. The jury also welcomed a new member. After joining the Z Festival jury three years ago, Gilles Botton replaced another Belgian, Luc Tilleman, alongside Eric Levallois and Heinz Meyer.
After many years where studbooks took their chances with so many different stallions, the trend now seems to be reversing and returning to a stricter selection for studbooks worthy of the name. Let's hope that these studbooks have finally decided to become a point of "reference" again, leaving other studbooks to satisfy unsatisfied owners.
However, the jury’s decision making was sometimes surprising, as when in doubt, they didn’t particularly favor genetics. It must be said that unfortunately, genetics are not always a guarantee for success, and this weekend proved it again... even if, as always, the jury's opinion was sometimes surprising ... but a jury taking its responsibilities seriously has been so long awaited that it would be hard to begrudge them their choices.
Genetics are nonetheless never far from the conversation, and it is no surprise that, among the best elements of this assessment, we find Cornetys d'I (Cornet du Lys x Toulon) who is none other than a son of the international performer Trinity d'I and grandson of the star performer Tequi d'I. Also noteworthy is Aymeric de Ponnat’s promising stallion, Azuro de Laubry Z (Aktion Pur x Nabab de Rêve), who is none other than a son of the international performer Wabelle de Muze, one of the full sisters to star performer London, and a grandson of Ta Belle van Sombeke.
C-Nobel (Cornet Obolensky x Quick Star)
Among the lucky selections, there was also C-Nobel (Cornet Obolensky x Quick Star), a full brother to the stallion Kannan Jr, whose granddam is none other than a full sister to the top performer Kannan, and Instar des Forêts (Balou du Rouet x Untouchable M), whose dam, Big Star des Forêts, is currently competing at the CSI level under the saddle of Pénélope Leprévost, and is a maternal half-sister to the stallions Quamikase des Forêts, better known as VDL Zirocco Blue who has performed at the highest level with Jur Vrieling, and Ready Boy des Forêts.

But there are also some nice surprises that do not present with pedigrees full of reference horses, but stood out due to their quality such as Cornado Fontanel Z (Cornado II Z x Untouchable M) who combined a beautiful technique with a lot of ability, and Romelu van de Nachtegaele (Magnum van 't Heike x Action Breaker) who showed a lot of strength over jumps. Dartagnan du Breil Z (Dominator 2000 Z x Califa LS) deserves a special mention, having been the most complete all-round stallion of this selection.

Two former French team linchpins came to greet the breeders in Deauville and received their breeding approvals at the same time. Firstly, Jérôme Hurel's former star, Quartz Rouge (Ultimo van Ter Moude x Qredo de Paulstra), from the Papillon Rouge line, who showed that he was still in great shape and in very good spirits!

Secondly, one of the first protégés of the Haras de Clarbec, the magnificent Topinambour (Heartbreaker x Veneur du Luc) who did his bit for the French team under the saddle of Pénélope Leprévost for several seasons.
