Lorenzo De Luca Wins Grand Prix of Rome CSIO5*
There could have been no more fitting winner of the Grand Prix of Rome than Italy’s hero, Lorenzo De Luca, who finished a perfectly scripted weekend with the most prestigious victory in his home country. Riding the great Halifax Van Het Kluizebos (Heartbreaker), De Luca was double clear over two rounds of the €350,000 CSIO5* Grand Prix where the top 12 came back for the second round. Ireland’s Bertram Allen placed a hard-fought 2nd with Hector Van D’Abdijhoeve (Cabrio Van De Heffinck), coming out a little more than half a second slower thank De Luca. And Edwina Tops-Alexander rounded out the top three and the double clear rounds of the day with Inca Boy Van’t Vianahof (Diamant De Semilly). All three of the top-placing horses are of BWP breeding. 2016 winner of the Grand Prix of Rome McLain Ward placed 4th with HH Azur (Thunder Van De Zuuthoeve) after a costly rail in Round 1. Riding the 8-year-old Holsteiner mare Calafrieda (Canto 16), Allen was 0.37 seconds slower than Wathelet. Dino W to Abdelkebir Ouaddar
Bertram Allen’s longtime mount Dino W (Berlin) will next be seen under the saddle of Abdelkebir Ouaddar of Morocco. Ouaddar announced on Tuesday, May 2, 2018, that the 10-year-old KWPN stallion had been purchased for him by his sponsor, his Majesty King Mohammed XI of Morocco. Dino W has already arrived in the stables of Ouaddar, and the new pair will make their competition debut at Fontainebleau in two weeks. Ridden by Ireland’s Allen since 2013, Dino W was owned by the Allen family’s Ballywalter Farms. Dino W has competed all around the world, from Geneva to Aachen. His first CSI5* victory was with Allen in 2016 at Stuttgart. Dino W was also ridden by Alex Duffy and Jack Dodd of Ireland before Allen took up the reins full time.
